The Films of Paula Prentiss
THE STEPFORD WIVES (1975)
This classic thriller was based upon the book by Ira Levin, who also wrote "Rosemary's Baby." Joanna and Walter (Katherine Ross and Peter Masterson) move from the chaos of New York City to the calm suburb of Stepford. Joanna befriends Bobbie (Paula Prentiss) and Charmaine (Tina Louise). The two women are mystified by the other wives of Stepford, who are virtually obsessed with cleaning and cooking, always looking perfect, and having no ambition other than to please their husbands. When Prentiss and her friends hold a feminist consciousness-raising session the other ladies choose to discuss nothing but cleaning products. One by one, the women in Stepford disappear, only to return behaving just like the rest of the town’s ‘perfect women’. Prentiss has some great lines in this film, one of which was to say there must be something wrong with Stepford's drinking water. An eerie, chilling, classic story of ‘living the perfect life’. BUDDY, BUDDY (1981)
Paula Prentiss co-starred with longtime buddies Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon in this last film directed by comic genius Billy Wilder. Matthau plays a hitman who is about to "ice" a mobster before he can testify in court. His concentration is interrupted by the sounds of the man (Lemmon) in the next room, trying to hang himself, depressed over his wife (Prentiss) having a romance with her sex therapist (played by Klaus Kinski). To keep him quiet, the hitman gags the man, who continues to try to commit suicide. In order to rid himself of the distraction, the hitman takes him to see his wife in the clinic, but can't shake him lose, and the suicide victim gets involved with the hit.
